A Nightmare on Elm Street - Aged better than Spandex

A Nightmare on Elm Street - at least Freddy has a good time

The movie starts like no other before it, with a menacing figure in the dimly lit workshop putting on the signature glove on, topped with steely knives.  Each time I watch this scene, I am somehow always surprised with how unsettling the scene is.  The screen is minimised significantly, which makes me feel like I'm voyeuristically watching Freddy (Robert Englund) carry out his gathering in his man cave through a small window.  Within the first few minutes, I feel like I am not welcome into this world because of the cinematography, from this I can only expect the movie to surprise me at every turn. This opening scene is accompanied by heavily creepy organ music, very similar to a church hymn. (The Church of Freddie and Fedora's perhaps?) Jarringly, the goofy graphics that next appear on screen makes me feel strangely nostalgic, and I wasn't even alive in the 80's.  I really wish horror movies these days embraced goofiness more in horror movies, it's always more...

A Nightmare on Elm Street - aged better than spandex.

I'm not exactly breaking any new ground by saying that a Nightmare on Elm Street is one of the most enjoyable horror movies of all time.  However, is the franchise the best horror movie franchise of all time?

No.

Most of the movies in the franchise are mediocre at best.  I don't think it is any coincidence at all that the movies that suck are the ones that don't have Nancy (played by Heather Lagenkamp) in them.

Let me explain.

The first "A Nightmare on Elm street movie" features Nancy Thompson.  She plays the final girl, and she uses her ingenuity to survive Freddy Krueger's attempts to kill her. This movie is excellent.

The third movie in the franchise "A Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Warriors" features Nancy as more of a secondary character as she helps the new teenagers of Elm Street defeat Freddy and unlock the powers that they possess in the dreamworld to do so. This movie is very entertaining, and in some parts very funny.

Now, let us examine the other movies.

The second flick, "A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge" does not feature Nancy Thompson, and it sucks.

The fourth film "A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Master" does not feature Nancy Thompson and it is bad.

The fifth movie "A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child" does not feature Nancy Thompson and it is an atrocity to every sense.

I think I've proved my point.

However, if you are still not convinced, I will be analysing each of the first five movies of this franchise, to rank each one, and to just finally have a place to expel my pent up excitement and/or disgust at each of the movies in this series because believe me, it goes into crazy directions....

Stay tuned as the review for the first five "A Nightmare on Elm Street" movies begins next week.
